Point taken, but . . . heffalumps?
Annie Proulx is taking the Oscar loss for Brokeback pretty hard.
I think the outrage may have done something to her prose style, which I am hoping is not permanent.
It was a safe pick of `controversial film' for the heffalumps, she says, and maybe I'm looking for too much precision in this allusion, but -- huh?

Er, heffalumps? Well, they are completely imaginary, and, according to Pooh, known to steal honey... but not so much with the Oscar stealing.
Exactly! Sometimes I dismiss the characterizations the AP makes when reporting other written material -- but calling this one "scattershot" is a precise use of the adjective.
